If today is like any other day, three children will die because of abuse or neglect. Approximately three million cases of child abuse are reported each year in this country and nearly three times that many go unreported. An estimated 1,500 children died due to abuse or neglect during 2006. Children aren't the only victims when abuse occurs; when children are abused or neglected, we all suffer.
The Friends of Kids in Crisis ("Friends") is a registered Colorado non-profit agency and is staffed solely by volunteers. Nearly 97% of our donations go directly to the support of abused and neglected children.
The Friends was founded in 1997, when concerned individuals from the community identified a need to support The Family Crisis Center and other local children's charitable organizations. The Family Crisis Center is located in Denver and currently shelters children ages 10 to 18 whose lives have been impacted by abuse or neglect. The Family Crisis Center seeks to provide new opportunities for children and adolescents that will enhance their lives and ability to function in the community.
While at the Family Crisis Center, children have access to medical care, mental health treatment, onsite schooling, family counseling and visitation. In the
2007-2008 fiscal year 800 children received varying levels of care or
treatment at the Family Crisis Center.
The Friends primary goal is to improve conditions for children who have been impacted by abuse or neglect. The organization is a strengthening force in the increasing battle against child abuse and neglect. But, we can only continue our cause if we receive ongoing financial support and assistance from the community.
